The donor matching

Although not the same, egg donation falls within the framework of the legislation on organ donation, and in this area, Spain has led the European ranking for more than 25 years.

Furthermore, both Barcelona and Madrid are very cosmopolitan cities, with inhabitants from all over the world, which is a feature that facilitates the task of being able to assign the ideal donor to each patient.

Our team uses a sophisticated system where donor files include photographs, anthropometric details, blood type. The personalised and accurate procedure, aim the maximum physical compatibility between donor, recipient, and, if there were to be one, the partner. Whenever possible, and even if there is no medical indication for this, we match the blood type. The “matching of the blood types” does not mean “equal blood types”. We consider matching thoes blood types that can be possible from a biological point of view resulting in a combination of two different blood types.

By law, egg donation is anonymous. Nor the donor nor the recipient will know each other’s identity.

The law

Egg donation is regulated by Law 14/2006 of May 26 on Assisted Human Reproduction techniques, by Royal Decree 412/1996 of March 1, and by Royal Decree Law 9/2014 of July 4, which establish that the donation of gametes in Spain is voluntary, anonymous and altruistic. This legal text also stipulates financial compensation to cover expenses and possible inconveniences deriving from said act.

They are women between the ages of 18 to 34, physically and mentally healthy, with complete capacity to act. At Eugin 70% of donors are single, and 52% have second degree studies or above.

1. Interview

In a personal interview appointed before the process, we check that their family and personal medical history, their motivations for this donation, their habits, as well as their weight, size, and blood pressure, are considered normal.

2. Medical check up

After a first visit, the donor undergoes an extensive medical check aimed at verifying her good health. Our in detail selection protocol dismisses sexually transmitted illnesses. For this reason we carry out the following tests:

  • Complete blood count, renal and hepatic function. Coagulation tests.
  • STD check, adapting serology to each donor. The serologies adapt to the donors characteristics.
  • Triple cytology and urogenital cultures.
  • Gynecological echography and breast examination.
  • Abnormal hemoglobin tests to dismiss hereditary anemias.

3. Genetic study

We carry out a karyotype, as well as a molecular study to dismiss mutations such as those related to cystic fibrosis.

4. Psychological study

Through a personal and in depth interview, conducted by our team of specialists, we dismiss the existence of psychiatric and psychological disorders as well as inadequate habits.

5. Treatment

Of all the women who apply to be donors, only 34% of them meet the requirements needed to finally perform the treatment.

The donor is monitored at every moment, and receives a personalised treatment. The objective is to obtain a good response whilst managing the donor’s wellbeing. She carries a normal life throughout the procedure.

6. Donation

The donation itself is carried out at the clinic, guaranteeing the donors security and well-being. After the retrieval, the eggs are taken to the laboratory and are prepared for their use.
