The last step in assisted reproduction treatment is to insert the embryos into the woman’s uterus, painlessly and without sedation
Embryo transfer is one of the most special moments in the whole process, and surprisingly, it is also the simplest. This is a procedure that generally doesn’t require sedation, and which is also painless for the woman. Although it isn’t necessary to have fasted beforehand, it is important that you drink up to a litre of water prior to it. What other recommendations should be followed?
Come to the clinic in advance
At least 30 minutes beforehand, in order to talk to the doctors and biologists about the process. The patient will be accompanied by a gynaecologist and embryologist at all times. The embryologist is the one who will explain to the patient which embryos will be inserted and what their characteristics are and the gynaecologist will perform the procedure, which involves inserting a catheter through the cervix to deposit the embryos inside.
Drink lots of water and don’t urinate before the transfer
For an enhanced visualization of the uterus and to facilitate the channelling of the cervix with the catheter, it is advisable to go to the clinic with a full bladder. You don’t need to have fasted beforehand.
If you have already undergone an embryo transfer
If this is not your first time, you can rest assured: you will already know how it works. However, if you’ve previously gone through inseminations or transfers with an element of added stress, and feel very nervous, we recommend that you inform us prior to the day of the transfer. In some cases, we will be able to administer a medication that will help you feel more relaxed.
Avoid stress on your trips to the clinic
Embryo transfer is the climax of the assisted reproduction process, and you may feel nervous during the days both before and after. From a medical point of view, it isn’t necessary to rest after transfer: it won’t help to increase the likelihood of successful treatment. However, if staying in Barcelona for a couple of days helps you feel more relaxed, you can do it: it’s up to you.
