ROPA
METHOD

I'm married to a woman and
we want to be mothers

The ROPA Method (Reception of oocytes from Partner)
is an IVF treatment for woman-to-woman marriages
who want to be mothers
and opt for a shared
motherhood with both participating in the
process in the quest to have a baby.

What is the ROPA Method?

The ROPA Method (Reception of oocytes from Partner) is an IVF treatment for woman-to-woman marriages who want to be mothers and opt for a shared motherhood with both participating in the process in the quest to have a baby.

The two women participate together in this treatment: one undergoes an ovarian stimulation in order to extract her eggs and fertilise them, and the other will receive the embryo in her uterus and will carry the pregnancy.

Thus, the ROPA method allows both women to be biological mothers: one will be the biological mother (the one that contributes the egg) and the other the gestational mother (the one who carries the pregnancy).

How does the ROPA Method work?

The ROPA IVF Method basically consists of a hormonal stimulation of the partner that donates her eggs and of the uterine preparation with oestrogen of the partner receiving the embryo. While this is being done, the preparation of the donor sperm is also carried out.

Phases of the
ROPA Method

Step 1 of 3

Donor

Ovarian stimulation

The woman who provides her eggs must undergo ovarian stimulation, the same process as in conventional IVF. Thus, the woman should undergo a hormonal treatment that allows her ovaries to be stimulated so that they produce follicles and promote the production of oocytes. The hormonal treatment, which must be carried out at home, lasts approximately 12 days. In parallel, the woman will receive continuous follow-up by means of ultrasounds and hormonal analyses to determine the best moment for the extraction of the eggs.

Follicular puncture

When the follicles have reached an optimum size for the extraction of a sufficient number of oocytes, ideally 8, the follicular puncture is done by sedation (mild anaesthesia), that is to say, the extraction of the mature eggs. The total duration of the intervention takes about 15 minutes.

Step 2 of 3

Laboratory

Sperm preparation and insemination

A sample of cryopreserved sperm from an anonymous donor is thawed, ensuring maximum physical similarity with the recipient in accordance with Spanish law. The eggs obtained from the donor partner are then inseminated with the sperm.

Embryo culture and fertilisationn

After the fertilisation of the eggs, the embryos remain in culture for between 2 and 6 days and their progress in the laboratory is observed until the day of their transfer. The best quality ones will be selected for transfer to the recipient partner.

Step 3 of 3

Recipient

Preparation of the endometrium

In parallel with the donor partner, the recipient must undergo hormonal treatment to prepare her uterus and achieve the right endometrial thickness so as to maximize the chances of the embryo becoming implanted.

5

Embryo transfer

Once the endometrium is prepared, the embryo or highest quality embryos are selected for transfer and inserted vaginally into the recipient woman's uterus. The process is quick and painless and does not require any anaesthesia.

Pregnancy test

About 15 days after the transfer, the recipient woman will undergo a beta-hCG test to confirm the pregnancy.
